Wines of France on Queen of Arts Paper

This was a commission to design an advertising poster for a brand of paper. The collage nature of the map, which combines images of landscapes and architecture, is augmented by the use of hand written lettering which draws us in to read more.

The Calligraphic Arts

Everybody's Wine Guide

This was a commission to undertake forty decorative maps illustrating the wine growing areas of the world.

The commission specified architecture, landscapes, wine growing methods, grape types and heraldic features for each of the areas discussed.

The Seasons

This piece is an exercise in different textures created by different styles, weights and spacing of letter forms. Each style is based upon the study of examples of historical scripts.

The little illustrations show a medieval style rendering of the signs of the Zodiac.

Hedgerows

This piece was inspired by watching a skilled pleacher at work in Herefordshire.

The cutting and laying of hedges is an ancient skill in which the living branches of the hedge row trees are woven into a natural barrier for the field’s edge.

The texture and colour of the lettering is designed to create an impression of the inter woven branches and the leaves of this living boundary.

The text combines the writings of Thomas Hardy with various poetry and scientific facts about hedgerows and their demise in the modern world of tractors and flail cutters.

Family Tree

This large piece measuring 5 ' x 4 ' was commissioned by a private bank and was designed to trace the partners of each generation back to the founder.

The coat of the arms of the family is large to balance the composition.

The sign of the bank the Golden Bottle is executed in gold leaf which is laid on a raised gesso ground
