This piece involves large areas of gold and white gold leaf laid on gum Ammoniac. This gum is produced from sap collected in the deserts of Arabia. This prepared through a process of soaking and straining the nuggets of sap to produce a smooth, sticky liquid to which the leaf adheres.
This piece illustrates flat gilding alongside the vivid blue of ultramarine pigment which was used extensively in medieval manuscripts.
