Song of Songs

The Song of Songs is a mystical book of the Bible. It can be seen as the process of the soul's union with God.

The human heart yearns to be united with God and the love poetry of the Song traces the journey of the soul towards that union.

Let Him Kiss Me

This illustration shows the lover and the beloved embracing.  The universal cosmic nature of their love and connection is emphasised by the plunging ray of the sun which comes between them but which is also part of their embrace

How Beautiful You Are

This is a picture of the garden enclosed, as a symbol of the heart, the private place which is surrounded by high walls, filled with glorious scented flowers.  The garden has at its centre a fountain which pours forth the water of eternal life into the still scented air of the secret garden.  The lover and the beloved are seen embracing in the foreground.

Listen My Lover

Here the woman is seen watching her beloved in the form of a stag bounding across the hillsides outside the wall of the garden.  She is caressed by the ray of the sun which touches the back of her head as she throws up her arms beseeching her lover to come to her.  We see the stag peering through a window in the garden wall and then he is there beside her.  The dream like quality of the idyllic landscape does not seem to be governed by the normal passage of time.  Events have telescoped into the present moment.

I Have Come Into My Garden

Finally the pair are reunited in the garden and we see them embracing within the walls of that secret space, while the fountain continues to pour the water of life into their relating.

You Who Dwell In The Garden

Here the lover is represented as both stag and man whilst the woman lies on a bed of roses dreaming of him and his prowess.

Why Would You Gaze

The dance of the Shulamite is a symbol for joy, beauty, and the love between the lover and his beloved.  It can be seen as a physical celebration of all these things.  As with many of these illustrations the action takes place under a star spangled sky to remind us of the cosmic dimension of love, human with human, and human with the divine.

His Left Arm

His left hand is under my head :This illustration depicts a tender love scene between the love and the beloved.  It is set in a jewel like landscape in the open country side.  Vineyards and corn fields, orchards and oases combine to offer a patchwork of landscapes.  Through it all runs the river of the water of eternal life as the lover and the beloved embrace and celebrate their union

I Am My Lover's

I am my lover's and my lover is mine : Under the over arching starry sky of heaven the lovers are at one.  The Cosmos, the divine, the human, and the heavenly are brought together as the soul finds union with the divine.  We can see this as a multi-dimensional story and running through it all is the notion that the soul is for ever seeking union with the divine, and that eventually, it will have its yearning, unrequited love, requited and fulfilled
