The inspiration for these pieces came out of an idea for creating a Bestiary. Medieval manuscripts were often concerned with beasts of all kinds. The Mysterious monsters in this series are divided into the elements, earth, air, fire and water. There are different monsters which inhabit each element.
They came during my studying of animal forms. My studying of actual animals made me wonder what beasts would look like if different animals were put together. So the series of Mysterious Magical Monsters was born. We have the combination of, for example a lion and a fish. This strange animal needed a name and Lish seemed to describe what had been created.
My study of heraldry can be seen as evident in each of the individual creatures and the way in which they have been designed. Heraldry was an ancient art which designed motifs for knights to bear on their arms as a means of identification when jousting or on the battle field. The shields would often be painted with terrible beasts and there would be a three dimensional sculpture of the same beast carved in wood or cast in metal and worn as a crest upon the helmet of the knight in his armour. Often the caparisons, the protective clothing of horses would be adorned with the same beasts.
The Tigrish is a mixture of a Tiger and a fish. The fierce Tigers head is open mouthed like a stylized medieval heraldic beast while the tail of the fish curves gracefully around the Tigers hindquarters.
Oryxish
The front legs of the antelope have morphed here into webbed limbs, whilst the fishes body and tail balance the long grateful horns upon its head
As I got into this project, the beasts became more and more fantastical. They came into being with a force all their own.
The pose adopted here by the front part of the beast is a typical heraldic stance. Often the designers of heraldry had to fit their beasts into constrictive pre determined spaces for example onto a shield.
This resulted in the contorted positions of some animals which made them seem even more other worldly. Here the Cheetahs front is combined with the tail of a Mackerel hence its name Cheeterel.
Is a truly fantastical beast. The front sheep is based on a four horned Hebridean sheep whilst the hind quarters are those of a lion.
Its red fangs relate more to the lion part whilst the purple wings take it into a whole other dimension.
The Lish combines the noble pose of the front end of a lion with the stylized tail of a large scaled fish.
The weight and size of the lions head is balanced by the graceful spiral curve of the fishes tail.
The front legs of the lion have morphed into fin like limbs and the hair of the lions mane morphs into the scales of the fishes tail.
The Golion combines the head of a goat with the hind quarters of a lion with wings for good measure. The beautiful golden colour gives the beast its name.
The extravagant horns complement the wreathing knots in the lions tail whilst the golden wings stand ready and carry the beast high into the sky.
